Peter Lewis |
Peter Lewis (8:30am service) 5th May 2013 Today's readings: Acts 16:9-15; John 14:23-29 Sermon theme: Comings and goings. During the transitional period of Easter to Pentecost, the disciples gradually realised Jesus was both about to leave them and about to be with them as never before. This was something he had talked about at the Last Supper, but only now are they beginning to understand. So here at St Leonard's today, despite all the comings and goings, Jesus has promised to be with us and the Holy Spirit will guide us. (Read the 7 verses from St John's Gospel before listening to Peter's sermon. Focus on verse 23. You may want to listen to this more than once. I did. - JS.) |

Peter Lewis (10:30am service) 4th April 2013 Sermon summary: Our readings tell the story of the confused disciples in the upper room on Easter Day and the transformation of Peter and John to enable them to preach the resurrection message boldly at the Temple gate. Both stories show how understanding scripture can give us the confidence to preach a message of repentance and the forgiveness of sins and this may help us to think about both how we manage our own church over the coming months and how we choose a new Rector. |

Peter Lewis |
Peter Lewis (8:30am service) 17th March 2013 Sermon theme: Love's Expense. An exploration of the supper with Mary and Martha in John chapter 12. Mary understands the costly and adundant love which Jesus is about to offers us on the cross and she shows this by her own extravagant gesture of love. Different responses by others in the room indicate some of the ways we might react too. But Mary knows that love should not be held back, but expressed now, and rather than always asking Jesus for something there is a time to say; "Thank you!" Passiontide shows God's abundant grace cascading like rich perfume into our lives and Holy Week is an invitation to follow and witness this gift. |

Just as this man was brought to Jesus by his friends, so we in our prayers may bring our friends into Christ's healing presence. Peter Lewis |
Peter Lewis (8:30am service) 20th January 2013 Sermon theme: A Generous Calling. Exploring St Paul's image of the church as a body of many parts - a body in which unseen and apparently unimportant parts are still vital. Drawing on Paul's letter to the Corinthians to help us think about our own roles within the wider church family, the theme is linked with the gospel of the day: John's account of the wedding at Cana. Just as Jesus took the ordinary things available (jars of water) and used the obedience of common servants to turn them into the finest wine, so ordinary gifts and common people (you and I!) can be transformed in Christ's service. |
